    • Depending on organizational policies and procedures, performance reviews can be half-yearly or annual. Many start-ups and IT-centric businesses also tend to have quarterly performance reviews from time to time. During any performance review, an employee or staff member's job performance over a defined time period is placed under scrutiny. She is tracked on various parameters such as consistency in job performance, impact on divisional or departmental results, commitment to current tasks and assignments, professional attitude and overall work and team ethic.

    Immediate Boss/Supervisor's Influence

    • During the course of employment in an organization or business, most employees report to respective bosses, managers or supervisors. An immediate boss or manager has the closest and up-front view of a particular employee, his working style, his capabilities and skills, his routine, overall roles and responsibilities. The concerned manager's accurate review report plays a crucial role in appraising an employee's performance over an earmarked period and can make the difference for a timely or well-deserved promotion or maintaining of status quo.

    HR Department Role

    • The HR department or division of an organization plays a critical role in the performance review of an employee or staff member. HR professionals devise and develop the systematized templates, appraisal and other metrics-based documents and forms to evaluate employees on select parameters. Managers, supervisors and HR top management fill out the necessary forms, generate reports and have a formal discussion. Salary raise, rewards, perks, incentives of employees are then decided by HR management based on the recommendations, reports and reviews of respective bosses and managers.


    • Performance reviews keep employers and employees sharp-edged, focused and earnest about each other's roles and responsibilities in an organization. It is a checks and balances-kind of system that ensures all-round commitment to organizational objectives. A periodic review of employee performance helps HR to keep track of the performers and the laggards. In some cases, pink slips are issued to non-performing employees. Used as a strategic and a motivating tool, sustained performance reviews and timely rewards and promotions for employees can result in long-term organizational benefits.
